
Your Optometry benefits at a glance
As a member of Platinum Health, visits to your optometrist are based on if you’re on PlatComprehensive, PlatCap or PlatFreedom.
If you’re on PlatComprehensive, your optometry benefits include:
Consultation, spectacles (frames & lenses) or contact lenses
- A combined benefit limit of R3 018 per beneficiary (PB) over a two-year period. For example, if you received spectacles or contact lenses in June 2025, you will only qualify for new spectacles or contact lenses in June 2027.
Correction of vision surgery
- You have unlimited cover, but you have to be referred by a GP or specialist and you have to get authorisation from us for the surgery.
- You are not covered for excimer laser treatment.
Screening for vision affected by chronic diseases
- You have one screening consultation PB every year to identify if your vision has been affected due to a chronic disease. Subject to clinical protocol approval.
If you’re on PlatCap, your optometry benefits include:
Consultation, spectacles (frames & lenses)
- You have a combined benefit limit of R1 511 PB over a two-year period. For example, if you received spectacles in June 2025, you will only qualify for new spectacles in June 2027.
Contact lenses
- You are not covered for contact lenses.
Screening for vision affected by chronic diseases
- You have one screening consultation PB every year to identify if your vision has been affected due to a chronic disease. Subject to clinical protocol approval.
Remember if you are on PlatComprehensive and PlatCap, you can find a DSP optometrist closest to you by using our WhatsApp! Just save 080 000 6942 on your phone and follow the steps! You have to use a DSP optometrist if you live within 50 km of the DSP. This includes optometrists at our medical facilities or DSP optometrists in your area. If you are unsure which provider to use, call our Client Liaison Call Centre on 014 590 1700 to confirm!
If you’re on PlatFreedom, your optometry benefits include:
Consultation, readers, spectacles (frames & lenses) or contact lenses
- You have a combined benefit limit of R3 820 PB over a two-year period. For example, if you received readers, spectacles or contact lenses in June 2025, you will only qualify for new readers, spectacles or contact lenses in June 2027.
- Readers must be obtained from a registered practice.
Refractive eye surgery
- You have a limit of R23 119 per family.
- You are covered 80% of the lower of cost or Scheme rate.
- You have to get authorisation from the Scheme for the surgery!

- PlatFreedom members have complete freedom of choice to visit any optometrist for an eye examination, spectacles (lenses & frames) and contact lenses.
