Platinum Health support Nelson Mandela Day

Platinum Health (PH) employees devoted 67 minutes and more on 18 July 2025 in support of Nelson Mandela Day celebrations. To honour the amount of time and resources former president Nelson Mandela devoted to improving the lives of children around the word, we made the elderly and children the focus of what would have been his 107th birthday.

Not content with making a difference in just one place, we visited three institutions to spread a bit of Madiba Magic! Here’s a snapshot of the activities that took place.

Fezeka Old Age Home

Fezeka Old Age Home is a home for the elderly and adults living with disabilities. It was formed in 2023 by Fezeka Helepe. The centre is situated in Ledig and caters to 13 beneficiaries, the oldest being 103 years old living with disabilities.

The Old Age Home was in need of paint and the doors needed varnishing too.

All dressed up in their overalls, our team enthusiastically started varnishing the doors and painting the walls, with many elderly people expressing their gratitude for our keen efforts. To ensure they sleep warm and cozy we also donated beds, sheets and an array of colourful comforters. Three brand new wheelchairs and a first-aid kit were also donated to the home too!

At the event, our Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. Rodney Gounden underlined the importance of preserving the legacy of Madiba. He said the elders carry the same wisdom and resilience and strength that Madiba stood for. He reiterated that Mandela Day is a call to action, a reminder that each of us has the power to change the world, even in just 67 minutes!

He honoured the elderly present at the event, saying they are a living testimony of what it means to endure, to love and to forgive.

Dimakatso Safe House

Dimakatso Safe House serves as a safety home for children and youth in the area. It offers integrated services to disadvantaged, neglected, traumatised and abused children and the house provides 24-hour’s accommodation, food, medical services, clothing, scholastic training, social counselling and any other services needed for their total care.

Our teams were excited as everyone pitched in with painting the house, and the end result was incredibly enjoyable and rewarding. We also donated two brand new washing machines to assist with laundry for the kids, supplies for groceries, school bags and party packs to ensure the kids can enjoy themselves.

At the event, our Nursing Services Executive, Mr. Albert Kokota said we are always happy to be able to make a positive difference in people’s lives, especially the youngsters of today as they are the leaders of tomorrow. “It is an exhilarating experience to be part of an initiative that gives something meaningful to the community. Thank you for the warm welcome we received from all of you, and we trust that our visit here today will make a positive difference in the lives of the children.”

Malomanye Child Drop-in Centre

The Malomanye Child Drop-in Centre serves as a home for child-headed families which was established in 2006 in the village called Malomanye surrounding Atok. The centre aims to ease the load of child-headed households by providing a day care facility for children aged zero to five years. There are 67 children who receive care at this facility and only 43 of these children receive financial support from social development.

Malomanye has a gardening service where they plant their own vegetables and give back to the families within the community in need.

At the event, our Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Tiisetso Tsiki thanked the centre for allowing us into their home and handed over the donations that Platinum Health brought for the centre which included school bags, curtain rails, curtains, paint, heavy duty doors and a first aid kit. We also participated in painting the walls and vanishing the doors, leaving them looking brand new.
