Women in Mining: Caring for Your Mental Wellbeing

Women in mining are at the heart of one of South Africa’s most demanding and important industries. Every day, you contribute your skill, strength, focus, and dedication, whether you work underground, on the surface, in technical services, laboratories, healthcare, administration, or leadership.
Alongside these responsibilities, many women also carry roles at home, in their families, and in their communities. Balancing workplace expectations, shift schedules, family commitments, and personal pressures can be exhausting. That is why your mental wellbeing deserves the same care and attention as your physical safety.
Just as we use personal protective equipment to protect our bodies, we also need daily habits, support systems, and moments of rest to protect our minds. Looking after your mental health helps you stay resilient, focused, and better able to manage life’s challenges, both at work and beyond.
Simple ways to care for your mental wellbeing
Make space for yourself. Set aside a few minutes each day to breathe, rest, pray, meditate, read, or enjoy a quiet cup of tea or coffee. Even 10–15 minutes can help you reset.
Care for your body too. Movement, nourishing meals, enough water, and good sleep all support emotional strength — especially when you are working shifts or long hours.
Lean on your support network. Stay connected with people you trust — colleagues, friends, family members, or mentors. Talking about what you are carrying can lighten the load and remind you that you are not alone.
Set healthy boundaries. It is okay to ask for help, delegate where possible, and say “no” when things become too much. Protecting your energy is part of protecting your wellbeing.
Notice when you may be burning out. Ongoing tiredness, irritability, difficulty concentrating, poor sleep, loss of motivation, or feeling emotionally drained may be signs that you need to pause and seek support.
Celebrate how far you have come. Women in mining continue to open doors, break barriers, and make a meaningful difference every day. Take time to acknowledge your progress, your courage, and your contribution.
Reach out when you need support. If you are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, persistently low, or unable to cope, please speak to someone. Reaching out early is not a weakness — it is a brave and positive step toward healing and resilience.
This Women’s Month, make a personal commitment to care for your mind, your body, and your heart with the same dedication that you bring to your work. When you care for yourself, you strengthen not only your own wellbeing, but also your family, your team, and your community.
Healthy minds help create safer mines.
